Visit to Burma

In Dec 2008, Lal and Indra visited Burma for about 3 weeks, with me as the "local" guide. We visited Bagan, Inle lake, Mandalay and finally Myitche. The journey between Bagan and Inle Lake was really taxing. The road was bad due to "re-construction" and the driver is not really good - by Burmese standard.

It is interesting that while the rest of the world is reeling from an economic slowdown and Burma is supposedly recovering from Nargis, there was a major road re-construction works everywhere we went. We may have our views of the government there but when it comes to roadworks, you cannot really fault them. I saw where they have split the traffic to minimise head-on collisions on the highway, there was also general improvement in geometric features, some road bridge/culverts were improved. Most works were of course by hand and in some places we saw children playing beside their mothers who were employed to break up the aggregates!

On a whole it was an eye-opener and I have travelled to Burma very frequently over the years.
